Answer-shaped content: write so AI assistants can quote you
September 1, 2026
Ask an assistant "how much does a deck cost in Sacramento" and it answers with two or three factual sentences pulled from pages that state costs plainly. The sites being quoted did not win with better branding. They won because their content was shaped like an answer.
The shape, concretely
A question a real customer would ask, as a heading. Directly under it, the answer in the first sentence, not the third paragraph. Two or three sentences of supporting fact. That is the whole pattern:
## How long does a website audit take? A RankMerlin scan takes under a minute for 5 pages. The full 25-page crawl on paid plans takes a few minutes, depending on the site's response time.
Compare that to the typical services page: "We pride ourselves on a client-first approach to digital excellence." There is no question that sentence answers. An assistant reads it, finds nothing liftable, and moves on to a competitor who wrote "kitchen remodels take 6 to 10 weeks and start at $30,000".
Retrofitting existing pages
- Rewrite vague section headings as the questions customers actually ask. "Our process" becomes "What happens after I request a quote?"
- Move the answer into the first sentence under each heading. Context can follow, not lead.
- Add a five-question FAQ to every money page: cost, timeline, area served, what is included, how to start.
- State numbers. Prices, durations, distances, and dates are what answers are made of.
Does it hurt classic SEO?
No, it is the same direction Google has moved for years with featured snippets and helpful-content guidance. Direct answers win in both systems, which makes this the rare fix that moves both of your scores at once.
Our scan includes an AI-powered pass that classifies whether your crawled pages contain answer-shaped content, factual density, and clear entity statements, so you can see which pages read as marketing fog to a machine.
Quick answers
What is answer-shaped content?
Content structured as a clear question followed by a direct, factual answer of two or three sentences. AI assistants can lift it into their responses almost verbatim, which is what gets you cited.
How do I make my pages answer-shaped without rewriting everything?
Add a short FAQ to key pages, turn vague section headings into questions, and put a direct answer in the first sentence under each heading. You rarely need a full rewrite.
